From 6 April 2024, trusts and estates with income From 6 April 2024, trusts and estates with income of all types up to £500 will not need to pay tax on, or report, that income as it arises. Where income exceeds £500, tax will be payable on the full amount. However, the new £500 tax-free amount will be reduced for some groups of trusts set up by the same settlor. For estates, the £500 tax-free amount will apply for every tax year of administration (unused amounts will not roll over to subsequent years when reporting under informal procedures) and to chargeable income, after taking off ISA income which continues to be exempt after a person has died until closure or up to 3 years following the death. For accumulation and discretionary trusts, the basic rates of tax will be withdrawn from the first £1,000 slice of income. HMRC are removing the VAT1 paper form which you us HMRC are removing the VAT1 paper form which you use to apply for VAT registration from its website from 13 November 2023. This is to encourage businesses and agents to use the online VAT registration service and should speed up the processing time. HMRC say it’s the most secure and quickest way to register for UK VAT. Please note that specific taxpayers will be able to receive the paper form still through the VAT Helpline, for example those business unable to access or use digital technology. In the true festive spirit, there are some fairly generous tax benefits available that every business should be considering taking full advantage of: • Your annual Christmas party will be an allowable expense for you as the employer and a tax-free benefit for your employees as long as certain conditions are met. • The party invitation can be extended to employees’ partners as well. • Providing they are not too extravagant, some Christmas Gifts to your employees are also tax free provided they meet the “Trivial Benefit” conditions. For example, a Christmas Turkey, bottle of wine or a nice box of chocolates should all be acceptable festive gifts.
